Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said the recently passed Right to Information (RTI) Law will be a game changer in Ghana’s fight against corruption.

“The Right to Information (RTI) Bill which has been on the radar for the last 20 years has finally been passed into law. This is historic and a major legacy in the fight against corruption,” he stated Wednesday during the Economic Management Team (EMT) Town Hall Meeting in Accra.

“The rationale for the bill is to give right and access to official information held by public institutions, private entities which perform public functions with public funds. This new Act, when operational, will be a game changer in the fight against corruption,” he added.

Ghana’s Parliament passed the long-awaited RTI Bill into Law on March 25.

The Bill, which was relayed before Parliament in March last year by the Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice Joseph Kpemka Dindiok after the previous parliament, the sixth of the fourth republic failed to pass it into law was drafted under the auspices of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) over two decades ago and more than a decade since the Executive arm of government in 2002 drafted the first RTI Bill.
