Former chief of defense staff Brigadier Nunoo-Mensah rtd has stated that Inspector General of Police (IGP) David Asante-Apeatu must muster the courage to resign if he is being influenced by politicians in discharging his duties,

Brigadier Nunoo-Mensah explained on AccraFM that due to political interference, the police are unable to discharge their security duties properly and professionally.

His comments follow the violence that characterised the just-ended by-election at the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

Heavily-armed National Security operatives shot and wounded several members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the private residence of the NDC’s candidate about an hour into the by-election at the La-Bawaleshie area.

A lot of civil society organisations including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo have called on the security agencies to act swiftly and investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.

“I think the IGP is being influenced by the politicians and that is why he can’t do anything,” Mr Nunoo-Mensah.

He added: “If I were him, I would have resigned from my post because of the influence.”

The former Chief of Defence Staff further stated that these events pose a threat to Ghana’s security ahead of the 2020 elections.

“Now former President Mahama has said the NDC will retaliate and that sends a signal to the country about where the 2020 elections are heading.”

He added: “The youth of this country must resist the tension from the NPP and the NDC to safeguard the peace of the country.”
