It seems like Jaime Lannister might not get his happy ending in Game of Thrones.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau discussed what awaits his character in Season 8 after Jaime had a falling out with Cersei. By the end of Season 7, Jaime finally decides to leave his sister’s side for the first time.
Season 8 will focus on Jaime’s tarnished relationship with Cersei, and whether Jaime will change and redefine himself moving forward.
“Can we redefine ourselves?,” Coster-Waldau said. “Most people have moments in their life where you go, ‘Can I really, fundamentally change?.’ The core of him has always been Cersei… When that’s taken away, what are you then? What’s left? Is there anything left?
“When he leaves, obviously he has no idea. He doesn’t know the answer to that question.”
During their heated confrontation in the Season 7 finale, Cersei implied she’s willing to have her brother killed. Coster-Waldau explained the meaning behind their conversation, saying Jaime finally admitted to himself and to Cersei he doesn’t love her anymore.
“I don’t love you anymore… I’m calling your bluff, and, you know, you can’t hurt me now because my heart has been destroyed by you,” Coster-Waldau said, discussing Cersei and Jaime’s last scene together.
However, Coster-Waldau also hinted Jaime’s strong resolve might not stick.
“That’s, of course, said in a moment of passion. Who knows if it’s true?
