I read a commentary on a Bible passage and these were the words I gathered from the reading “Allow-God-to-surprise-you”. It sounded perfect until I began to have counter thoughts which made it very difficult for me to want to be surprised by God.
What if I actually get surprised because He does the exact opposite of what I expected? Or what if He doesn’t show up with any kind of surprise at all? Sincerely, I began talking myself out of this surprise business. It is nice to see people get surprised in movies but definitely I didn’t have plans of telling God to surprise me.
After a while though, I realized something rather interesting. We make plans every day and have all the confidence in the world to stick to them even when we are not sure about achieving the kind of results we wish for. We also are able to trust people who can change their minds at any time without the fear that they too can “surprise” us. So then how difficult should it be to tell the one who knows the end from the beginning and the one who does not change to surprise us. What do we stand to lose?
Life keeps packaging different surprises for us each and every day. Some of us have had surprise packages that hit so hard that we don’t think we can make it through life’s journey anymore. There are a bunch of us who have had surprise packages from others which have caused us so much and we wonder if we can ever forgive them. There are others also who do not believe in any kind of package anymore because they have had enough.
God’s kind of surprises are really not like the kinds we might have experienced because He has said so much what He has planned for us in His word. The element of surprise comes in because we usually have no idea as to when and how His surprise packages will be delivered to us. We only know that once He has said it, He will do it.
If we only can trust God to make alive His promises for us, we should be confident enough to say, “Dear God, surprise me.”
