Yaa Serwah’s Diary: Stand Alone

Must Read

I sat quietly in the theory class that cloudy morning trying to understand a theory that was propounded when my mother had not even thought of going to high school. The lecture was on the Spiral of Silence propounded by Elisabeth Noelle Neumann. It suggests that people have the tendency to remain silent when they feel their views are in opposition to the majority view on a subject. Well, is that not what it is now?

Honestly, you just know that expressing your displeasure about something that everyone has already voted for, will mean getting ready for tons of attacks.

So, in times when you are not fully armed to defend yourself, you are better off being quiet. Your silence might even turn to be “I agree with you guys” especially when you are dealing with people who would not allow for any other views but theirs.

Not everyone will understand your dream of being the best you can be, so it is just fine that you set yourself apart.  Some may think you are proud or unrealistic, or opinionated just because you are convinced that there is more to you than what they see now. Daniel understood this principle when he vowed to not eat what the rest ate in the King’s palace. Abraham just understood that he could not please God if he did not go up there alone to sacrifice his son. Jesus knew that He did not need all His disciplines to pray that night at Gethsemane. What does God need you to stand alone to do?

Standing alone does not always mean you are on the wrong path. The path may be full of twists and turns, and it may not look like the journey is worth it, but you have to remember that faithful is He who has set you on that path. He will not disappoint, so do not keep silent when you know that idea is all the world needs.
